CHAPTER FOURTEEN

Despite whatever Shan had done to me, it was an effort to drag myself back to the boarding house. I considered pulling one of the pearls off the neckline of my dress and using them to pay for a ride, but there wasn't a single carriage in sight. Not even a donkey cart or a rickshaw passed me as I toiled back up the hill.

I found Daryus asleep, for once curled up in bed without a bottle for comfort. I stood beside the window, letting the cool breeze dry the sweat from my face, and was just about to pull off the wretched dress when the outer door banged open.

Thomas stood there, his face that dangerously pale shade. Despite myself, I backed away, one hand reaching for the window mullion for support.

For half a minute, Thomas just stood there, chest heaving as if he'd run as far as I had, nostrils flaring with each breath. Finally, words grated out from between his teeth. "You little whore."

My mouth dropped open, more in surprise than outrage. For all the arguments I'd had with Thomas, he;d never once insulted me. This, though – this was a rage I'd never seen.

"All this time I've spent. All this money," he went on. "I was genuinely stupid enough to think you might have changed, that you and I might start again. That you might come to feel something for me. But no. You're too busy acting the slut, running around town with your men, playing at being one of them and gods know what else. You're disgusting, but by the gods, you're still my wife. You will return me with to Requies or I will have you buried in this hovel of a city before I leave."

Thomas advanced with one hand raised and I cringed back instinctively, but my hand was already closing around the handle of Daryus' dagger, left in its sheath on the windowsill. I fumbled it into my palm, trying to shake off the sheath before Thomas reached me. He loomed over me, his shadow falling across my face, and my head flooded with memories from those painful first months of our marriage. The dagger sheath rattled to the floor and I might have stabbed him there and then – except there was a click from across the room and both our heads came up.

Daryus stood in the bedroom doorway, half-dressed and with a pistol in his hands. Its muzzle pointed unwaveringly at Thomas' head.

"Stand away from my sister." Daryus' tone was soft, his words calm, but I knew that was a sign he was just as furious as Thomas. Perhaps more so. Thomas had ever been a slave to propriety; Daryus followed his own moral code, one that perfectly justified shooting his brother-in-law for even thinking of laying a hand on me.

Thomas moved away, a feral smile crossing his face. "Fighting your sister's battles, Manteios?"

"I don't call bullying a woman half your size a battle," Daryus replied. I wanted to protest
